How to Free Up Storage on Android
Running out of storage on your Android phone is incredibly common. Before you know it, you’re getting “storage full” notifications and can’t take new photos or install apps.
The good news is that most of the space is usually taken up by things you can safely remove — and freeing it up is easier than you think.
Check What’s Using Your Space
Before deleting anything, see what’s actually taking up room.
- Go to Settings → Storage (or Device Care → Storage on Samsung).
- Look at the breakdown by category: Apps, Images, Videos, Audio, Documents, System.
- This tells you where to focus your efforts.
Method 1: Clear App Cache
Apps accumulate temporary files over time — sometimes gigabytes worth.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Tap on a large app (check the storage breakdown first).
- Tap Storage & Cache.
- Tap Clear Cache (NOT “Clear Data” — that deletes your login and settings).
Safe to clear cache on: Social media apps, browsers, streaming apps, games.
Method 2: Delete Unused Apps
Most people have apps they haven’t opened in months.
- Go to Settings → Apps → See all apps.
- Sort by size or last used.
- Uninstall apps you haven’t used in the last month.
Quick alternative: Long-press any app icon on your home screen → Uninstall or Disable.
Method 3: Clean Up Photos and Videos
Photos and videos are usually the biggest space hogs.
- Delete duplicates and bad shots. Go through your gallery and remove blurry photos, screenshots you no longer need, and duplicate images.
- Back up to the cloud. Use Google Photos (free up to 15 GB) or another cloud service, then delete local copies.
- Empty the trash. Deleted photos often sit in a “Recently Deleted” or “Trash” folder for 30 days. Empty it manually for immediate space recovery.
- Compress large videos. Video files are massive — consider keeping only essential ones.
Method 4: Manage WhatsApp / Telegram Media
Messaging apps store every photo, video, and voice message you’ve ever received.
WhatsApp:
- Open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage.
- See which chats use the most space.
- Delete media from specific chats or by file size.
Telegram:
- Go to Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage.
- Clear cache or set auto-delete for old media.
Method 5: Use Google Files
Google Files (free from the Play Store) is excellent for finding and removing junk.
- Open Files by Google.
- Go to the Clean tab.
- It shows exactly what you can safely delete: duplicate files, old screenshots, backed-up photos, and app cache.
- Tap Clean to remove suggested items.
Method 6: Move Files to SD Card
If your phone supports an SD card:
- Insert the SD card.
- Go to Settings → Storage.
- Select SD Card → Migrate data or Move media.
- Choose what to move (photos, videos, music).
Method 7: Delete Downloaded Files
Your Downloads folder is often a graveyard of old files.
- Open your Files app.
- Navigate to Downloads.
- Sort by date or size.
- Delete everything you no longer need.
Method 8: Clear Browser Data
Your web browser stores cached data that can grow surprisingly large.
- Open Chrome (or your browser).
- Go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear browsing data.
- Select Cached images and files.
- Choose a time range (try “Last month” first).
- Tap Clear data.
Prevention Tips
- Enable auto-delete in Google Photos after backing up.
- Set WhatsApp to not auto-download media on mobile data.
- Review storage monthly and clear cache regularly.
- Use streaming instead of downloading music and videos.
- Choose “Install” over “Install and Keep” when updating apps.
Quick Storage Audit Checklist
- Clear app cache for large apps
- Delete unused apps
- Delete duplicate and old photos
- Empty photo trash/bin
- Clean WhatsApp/Telegram media
- Check Downloads folder
- Clear browser cache
- Back up photos to cloud
The Bottom Line
The fastest way to reclaim space is: clear app cache → delete unused apps → clean photos/videos → empty messaging app media.
For ongoing maintenance, install Google Files and let it alert you when storage is getting full. It does the heavy lifting of finding what to delete.
